MERCEDES-BENZ AMG

AMG, which is now the official performance division of Mercedes-Benz, has a long history of producing high-performance derivatives of Mercedes' standard production vehicles which enjoy a cult-like following worldwide. AMG, the name derived from founders Hans Werner Aufrecht, Erhard Melcher and Großaspach, which was Aufrecht's place of birth in Germany, was founded in 1967. Aufrecht and Melcher were both former Mercedes-Benz engineers and they started the company to develop racing engines and a Mercedes-Benz focused motorsports program in saloon car racing, which the factory had long abandoned on an official level. The car that put AMG on the map was the famous 300SEL 6.8 "Red Pig" which dominated its class at the 1971 Spa 24-hour race and finished second overall. The massive, thunderous luxury sedan obliterated a field of nimble sports cars and caused a sensation among motorsport fans.

AMG and Mercedes continued a long and fruitful relationship, with the former charged with running the successful Mercedes DTM program in the 80s and 90s. An official partnership was forged in 1990 and consolidated in 1999, when Daimler-Benz acquired a majority stake in the Affalterbach-based company. Today, the AMG name is a global powerhouse, and is the showcase of Mercedes-Benz' performance line.

THE CAR OFFERED

Alongside its motorsports exploits, AMG offered an extensive range of tuning and styling parts for Mercedes-Benz road cars. Enthusiasts could have just about anything from simply styling updates to a full drivetrain conversion – whatever their budget and imagination could handle. This European-market W123 280E sedan is an example of an extensively modified early "pre-merger" AMG, featuring a full complement of parts and accessories, along with a tuned M110 inline six-cylinder engine. This car came well-equipped from the factory, with numerous options and extras, including Champagne Yellow paint, Palomino leather upholstery, automatic gearbox, electric sunroof, Tempomat, Behr air conditioning, seat heaters, and headlamp washers. While there is no documentation to support the claim, Mr. Taylor believed that early in its life, it was handed to AMG in Affalterbach for comprehensive updates, including an AMG body kit, blacked-out exterior trim, color-keyed black and Champagne Yellow BBS alloys, and engine tweaks that reportedly raise the output of the twin-cam six to a hearty 225bhp.

As part of the Barry Taylor Collection, this rare 280E AMG has been stored indoors, and shows signs of shelf-wear but otherwise in good order with its highly desirable AMG parts intact. While in Bonhams' care, it has not been run, and will require recommissioning due to extended storage. Once refreshed, however, it would undoubtedly star at RADwood® events and be right at home in any collection of Mercedes-Benz automobiles.
