Description

1986 Mercedes AMG 560 SEC 6.0 #2588

• Part of the “80s Time Capsule Collection”
• One owner from new
• Black on Palomino
• Built new January 1987 at AMG Westmont
• AMG 6.0 liter V8 32V engine
• Complete with original AMG invoices

An, exceptional pre-merger AMG example, documented by its original owner from new. Arguably the best preserved and most original early AMG example ever made available. Documented from new with only 26,978 original miles and preserved by its original owner, this unique 6.0 SEC AMG was ordered new from AMG’s U.S. factory in Westmont, a suburb west of Chicago, Illinois.

There are plenty of greats and a few you could call special, but only a handful of cars can truly be described as truly legendary. The 1986 AMG 6.0 SEC neatly falls into the legendary category and has become an automotive cultural myth, a great car made even greater by AMG, a German-based tuning company with experience building and developing racing engines.

This is more than just a Mercedes-Benz hot rod; it is the car that invented the Mercedes-Benz hot rod. It came from the mid-1980s, when there was the perception that money was in the air, every automotive brand was brimming with confidence, looking to make a statement and one-up the competition.

The specialist company calling itself AMG (for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach) formed by Mercedes-Benz engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher established their business in the small German town of Burgstal near Stuttgart. The specialist car brand started with the simple idea of taking Mercedes-Benz sedans such as the 300E “Hammer”, putting a great big engine and high performance parts in them and creating virtual rockets out of what were normally ordinary family cars.

AMG Wesmont, run by Richard Bauxbum, was the official distributor for AMG in North America and famously responsible for some of the most historic iconic AMG examples ever produced. The majority of these extremely rare early AMG cars frequently traded hands, were modified and lost their original documentation and paperwork.

This 1986 Mercedes 560SEC AMG 6.0 32V is arguably the cornerstone of our 80s Icon Collection. An unparalleled pre-merger AMG example, described by numerous marque experts as the “the best they have seen!” Documented from new and preserved by its original owner, this unique SEC AMG was ordered new from AMG Westmont.

Remarkably, the first owner kept all of the car’s original records, its first title, communication with Richard Bauxbum. The car has been kept in perfect condition from 1987 to today where it may be seen in the Curated showroom. Never advertised, never publicly shown, it comes available for the first time as a time capsule and testament to preservation.

As we’ve become accustomed to, 560 SEC AMG 6.0 has a definitive presence. The first thing that is striking about the car is the monochrome black exterior and immense size even without the usual AMG bodywork add-ons, this car is a big coupe, in the mode of the Bentley Continental R, and its outwardly subtle looks belie the performance under the skin.

AMG Westmont increased engine size from 5.6 to 6.0 liters, the V8, 32-valve normally aspirated engine producing 385BHP at 5,500RPM propelling the big car to a top speed of 178MPH, faster than the Ferrari Testarossa, Lamborghini Countach and Porsche Turbo according to motoring publications of the time.

By usual AMG standards, this example’s interior is missing some of the usual James Bond-like gadgets such as the multi-multi-adjustable seat console or car phone and add-on stereo options. The lack of interior toys and buttons lends to an uncluttered, luxurious cabin and more than comfortable for four passengers.

The black exterior is offset nicely with the Palomino colored leather interior. As with all of the “80s Time Capsule Collection” cars, the beautiful darker-than-tan leather interior is like brand new and shows no sign of age or patina.

From the owner’s records, the all original AMG parts which were installed by AMG at Westmont in January of 1987 included:

AMG Wheels
AMG Body Kit (painting and installation of body kit, chrome and plastic in color of car)
AMG Self-Level Suspension
AMG Emblem
Engine 6.0 liter 4 valve
AMG Sport Exhaust
Tubular exhaust headers
AMG 2.82 Gleason Torsen differential with limited slip

“At Curated, we do not acquire cars simply for inventory but rather based on what the car is. We love interesting provenance, very low production, very low mileage, very special and often weird cars.”

Thanks, the 560 SEC 6.0 is still available at Curated in Miami.

The car has undergone full service at Hartmut Feyhl's Renntech in Stuart, Florida.

Must see to appreciate.
