Well - I can tell you the pentas on both the 6.9 and td are newer AMG additions. Not sure if the cars were modified right after purchase or sometime after.

BTW- Remember you from JC if your handle is the same on vortex.

This SL 70 has the engine number not fitting to the model. BR 129 have 120.981 or .983 numbers. This .982 comes from a BR 140.
Wonder what went wrong.

Sent Henric a text re: wagon result and his reply "Wow"

The widebody with the 6.0 had the M117/119 hybrid engine. I guess the market prefers the straight M117. The Gen I 1984 WB 5.4 that beat the M117/M119 is a SOHC (and proudly wearing valve cover stickers made by me and Henric!).

Maybe because 1st gen 5,4 SOHC/DOHC were produced less than 6,0 DOHC?
Curious what Henric thoughts now: "Honey, I told you to wait with selling!"

I followed the auction for the 500 TE... I had hoped for a lower price ;)

In addition to the fees for the sale, if the car is for instance imported to the European Union there are further import duties to be paid ... all the cars from the youngtimers collection were in Switzerland. Quite an uplift from the hammer price in total. I have experienced it myself 8-)

Peter, what are the rules regarding import duties? If a car was originally a Euro car and is brought back to the EU, are import duties still applied to the sale price?

Generally no ("preferential origin of goods" or sth like that), but it depends of custom officers in different countries. For example in Banana Republic of Poland they don't care about it and you need to go to court. You will always win, but lost time is yours...

“Banana Republic”, lol.

Just curious, both of my AMG s were originally purchased in the EU.

Thanks

Quote regarding the RM Essen auction:

The bidding competition continued Friday, when perhaps the most highly anticipated lot of the Collection, a 1979 Mercedes-Benz 500 TE AMG, saw more than ten bidders raising their paddles for the pre-merger wagon, which eventually exceeded all expectations and made an astonishing €143.750, more than doubling pre-sale estimate of €60/70k and establishing a world record price for the model. Similarly, a 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC AMG 5.4 ‘Wide-Body’ also ignited a bidding battle, bringing a final €161.000, and far exceeding pre-sale expectations and establishing a new world record.

Henric should be proud for finding, saving and restoring this car to such a high level to garner this much attention and accolades.

Al, unfortunately yes. Import duties and VAT ! I have experienced it: Japan car imported to the UK (all fees paid), when went to Switzerland, and back to France. VAT is payable in France. IF the customs specialist doing the import is clever, it could be possible to retrieve the UK duties payment and avoid French customs duties (10%). VAT is 20% here.
So for instance the 560 SEC AMG 6.0 sold at RM in Paris for 300.000€ (or the 500 TE ...): add 30% if it stays in France or EU....Ouch !

That is ridiculously punitive. Especially on older collector cars. Sellers from outside the EU get less payout on their consigned cars because bidders have to factor in the heavy tax burden to their bidding.

There may be actually a reduced rate somewhere for old-timers. But still some money ...
