That is an early 1985. My W1985 Widebody was delivered 10 / 17/ 1984 with a VIN WDB1260441A108356. This car has an earlier VIN.

Well there is just over 28,000 cars of all types between. Model year runs 9 / 85 to 9 /86. Probably one of the first 1985's built. Or it is a 1984 titled as a 1985. Some states registered cars year sold instead of model year.
Not trying to detract from the car at all. BEAUTIFUL CAR!!!

Car is slated to sell Thursday afternoon/night (lot 712).

Well we have all been waiting to have some definitive value assigned to pre-merger W126 AMG cars and this will be a bell-weather car. Given the venue/auction, the consignor could have chosen a better auction. I believe RM or Goodings or Russo & Steele would be better than BJ. BJ is more known or American muscle than Euro sports/GTs. However, Scottsdale is a good venue if BJ is who is chosen. Lots of bidders in AZ in January.

Widebody, SEC, Black/Black, quad cam, manual tranny, very nice looking condition - car punches a lot of buttons. Missing the Sebring exhaust. Odd vacuum element behind the distributor.

Ok, let's hear guesses on the final winning bid. I'll start - my guess is a winning bid of $55,000. The last pre-merger AMG at auction was Jono's Hammer wagon at $36k plus 10% premium =$40k all in. That was 4 years ago. My hope is the car sells for $70k or so!

The pods at the fire wall are oil separators, the vacuum element behind the ignition distro assists with idle.

I doubt it will sell at that auction. Reserve won't be met. I think AMG5PT4 is right about this not being the best auction to sell a car like this.

My guess is bidding will stall at $29,000. My guess is it will go this spring for $44,000.

Unbelievable car!
Now I'm bummed out. I thought I had the only SEC in existence with manual transmission done to AMG specs ;-( LOL.

Just curious, what is the function of the oil separator? I do see how the vacuum diaphragm would raise the idle. (as you can see it is idling at 1000)

The dohc valve covers evolved over the years addressing oil blow back issues, this was an intermediate solution.

The last Gen 1 W126 AMG to sell was this one : http://www.artcurial.com/fr/asp/fullcat ... 1&image=12

Obviously a biased comparison point, but even without AMG engine it was estimated 25,000 euros. Sold for 117,000 euros.

That one was an outlier and I bet the price was reflected by the fact that the one and only owner was royalty.

The 32v 5-speed example is a lovely example, the pinnacle of period-AMG excellence. I wouldn't be surprised seeing familiar names bidding on it, its a rare and possibly only chance an example like this will come up for sale.

FWIW, I have an original dealer order form that had an estimate for a 6.0 32v 5-speed SEC for a Japanese customer. Order was being completed in Germany and being shipped to Japan. So a good chance one was built like it, but regarding its current status is anyone's guess.

Auto Motor und Sport magazine 25 July 1984 features a VERY similar example and this was our inspiration for our wide body build.

The article within the publication as translated by member Roland500SEL:

PART 1:
Luzifer lures

The call came from Chicago. " Erhard, you can make that for me? " the voice of AMG boss Hans Werner Upright asked by deep sea wire in the 6,000 kilometers far removed 2,942 soul village Burgstetten, where Erhard Melcher, once the official M in the company name, in the meantime only mental vendor in moving parts, picked up the phone. Yes, he could. A four valve engine had always fascinated him. And why actually not for Mercedes?

The idea, which Aufrecht, residing on the Daimlerstraße 1 of the wuerttembergs Affalterbach, had on the Chicago autosalon, got a relatively fast shape under Melchers mental wings. Roundabout one and a half years after the by telephone brought demand the first Mercedes V8 with four-valve cylinder head ran on the AMG engine test stand - the end of a set of obligations, which reached from the installation dimensions to pipe problems with the foundry. Melcher is proud on the fact that he could realise the same valve angle as with the Porsche formula 1 engine (two times 15 degrees), he paid attention to that the achievement of the four-cam shaft engine in the lower speed range was held, and he rejected the once into the discussion brought turbo. His detailed four-valve studies, which lay still before the first sketches, concerned the BMW formula 2-Vierzylinder and a quite successful motorcycle engine, i.e. the four valve engine of the 500 XL.

Hydraulic tappets are, Aufrecht explained, planned for the future. Approximately 200 to 250 engines are going to be developed per year - the predominant majority for coupe and sedan, but conceivably are also different intended purposes: for the offshore boat building and in the sport for the group C. A further transplant of the new light alloy machine into other Mercedes models is not meant. Possible is everything said the Boss about 95 tuning workers, which causes the annual turnover of 40 million Marks, but he wants to leave it as it is.

The test car, in the official AMG documents still defined as engine- and transmission-test car, was the widebody version 500 SEC, which itself, apart from the engine change once, got a whole set of modifications. Most remarkably are the flared wings from plastic in front and in the back (widenings from steel sheet are in preparation), and if one already is with describing the blown up body, one may not forget also side skirts, front spoilers, tail spoilers and tail apron. All of this serves to be able to accommodate nine inch rims in front, (tires: 245/45 VR 16) and ten inch rims in the back (265/50 VR 16). The air resistance factor could be held with 0,35 in; altogether the broad version has however more trouble than the basis with produced wind, because the front surface increased by approximately nine per cent. Small comfort for the tuning friend: The rear axle lift was not reduced by less than 93 per cent.

PART 2:
One can use it: because the AMG Mercedes is one of the fastest in the country. Notmuch cars reach the 259 km/h. And if one endeavored now the words from the mothball box of the autojournalism, then it were high time to point out that the broad black Monster really none „Opponents" knows - it is, one would turn out coincidentally in the training of Le Mans. But he would deliver no bad figure even there on the famous Hunaudiéres straight line. Which such speeds on the mostly well filled german motorways have to look for, already is another question. Nevertheless however AMG Mercedes is also given on the runway by engine characteristic a kind of nature, which makes also a driving with normal speeds not only possible under obligation. The renouncement on the turbochargers was probably also in this sense a correct decision, because here one got a completely smooth the performance curve straight running V8, on low rpm not overwhelming, in the center strongly and shortly before reaching the rpm limit of 6.000 it runs like hell. 340 horse power (250 KW) is proven at 5750 rpm, a the right quantity for the 1756 kilograms, which the test car brought on the balance. Even the maximum torque is not bad: 457 Newtonmeters with 4500 rpm. All of this was adapted to a five-gearbox and it went very properly. Well, the acceleration time of 0 to 100 km/h, in the heads of the Tuningbranche often as exclusive synonym for driving joy rated. is not so impressive with a value of scarcely under seven seconds at all . But, then one must also say here, what do 100km/h mean for a car of this performance class? One is finally still in the second gear of the easy and accurately adjustable Getrag transmission, which is well gradated and opens speed ranges, which are good for GTG talks reserved for regulars discussions at least. Third to 184. Fourth to 225. And before we forget it: The speedo, signed of prince Nawaf are Saud are Abdul Azis, AMG representative in Saudi Arabia, goes to 300. Quite impressively are also the noises composed by this car. First of all is to be praised. that the nevertheless substantially changed body also at high speeds hardly causes wind noises and for this reason leaves a wide acoustic field to the engine. It is, completely contrary to the oem engine in a 500 SEC, a real V8 sound, which blows from the double tube, mechanically amazingly quietly, which even the ear of the cylinder head creator pleasantly surprises. During high rpm and full power its then a rather angry, still a little irregularly sounding Stakkato, leaving no doubts about the fact that this car needs much more place, than it has available normally.

But - as said, it also works the other way. Starting from 800 revolutions the V8 in the lower courses, working with a somewhat jerky idle, it can be accelerated in lower rpm without probs and who is tired of changing gears, really only must do the necessary. Also on the motorway the AMG can if necessary be driven almost in high gears.

That one may set here on a very good straight line discharge at high speeds. it is surely reassuring just as the fact that the chassis modifications did not change the good basic comfort of this Mercedes model drastically. The slow travelling comfort is a little rough, depending upon tire make, rumbling on transverse joints and small unevenness - altogether however can be counted, in the association on the small wind noises, on a satisfying travelling comfort. In curves the high achievement can be brought amazingly well on the ground, whereby AMG Mercedes a altogether good-natured behavior puts to the day. On wet roads caution is announced - who wonders with this tire-format and the mentioned bear forces. Also the brakes. a topic with fast cars nevertheless again and again, although completely standard, with foresighted driving fashion act unimpressed of strong demand.

One can say that about the prospective customers, who hear the price for this car, only in exceptional cases. Who can be lured from the with buffalo leather garnished Luzifer must have nearly 225,000 Marks loose in his pockets - the four valve engine alone costs already 35000 Marks. But even if that seems so expensive in this country - in other parts of this world its just peanuts. This is particularly valid for Saudi Arabia. one the most important export market of the Affalterbach tuning troop. Here a AMG Mercedes is nothing else as a easily earned massage of the soul for bored desert sons. The Koran does not have anything against it.

Taking into account the recent 32V widebody sales:

Kyle sold his last 32V for 70-80k - that was a black 6.0 automatic.

The silver 1990 SOHC wide body posted last fall - 40k? - anyone know? 6.0 SOHC, but with fishy paperwork, unproven to be a 6.0

Kirk Salvatore's widebody sold ~$38-40k - 1987 6.0 automatic, semi modified

This one - 1985 5.0/5.4 you have the rarity of the manual, but with the early 32V. Between $35-50k

Had this car been like that silver Gen2 wide body, but w/ 6L 32V manual, that'd be something above what Kyle got for his black wide body.

So basically values are all over....we'll find out in 5 days!

Very few difference between the 5.4 being offered at the auction and the one in the Auto Motor und Sport article. Fog lights, door panels and some equipment on the central console ... At least from I could spot. I also have a copy of the magazine, a pleasure to read it again !
