Rare Japan market pre-merger AMG Upgraded 300TE Wagon with full set of AMG engine, chassis and body modifications.
Very special and unique 1991 Mercedes Benz 300TE-24 3.4 AMG that was imported from Japan. Built during the pre-merger era, this 300 TE wagon is an excellent example of a well-maintained AMG special that underwent the full AMG treatment with a 3.4 build done to it by AMG Japan. Overall condition is very good inside and out and the car runs well.
The dramatic silver exterior features a lowered profile and unique bumper and sill covers. Car is fitted with a factory sunroof, roof rails and AMG badges. Paint shows well, but does display minor signs of wear typical of a car that has been driven. Equipped with EVO style 6 spoke wheels and fresh Michelins on all 4 corners, this car has excellent balance and handling while still delivering an extremely comfortable ride quality.
The interior is in well preserved condition throughout. The perforated leather seats are in good shape with some minor wear and creasing. There are matching checkerboard floor mats over clean carpeting and the headliner is in excellent condition. The impressive dashboard offers a full complement of instruments and controls, and a center console. The ample wood trim makes an upscale impression, but does show some signs of aging consistent with the vintage. A Sony CD audio unit is fitted. One special feature is the rear facing third seat that adds utility. The Mercedes 300 series wagon is an outstanding design that provides ample space and functionality.
Under the hood lies the exciting heart of the matter - the AMG motor. Ordered as a 990 option car, this 300TE 24 valve has a M104 that was modified by AMG with a larger bore and a longer stroke for a displacement increase to 3.4 liters. The valvetrain was also fitted with AMG camshafts, contributing to claimed output of 268 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 243 lb-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm. The air filter housing is topped by an AMG-branded lid. The stampings on the engine show the appropriate BOSCH, BERU, and Champion C9. AMG stampings on the front radiator support are still in place marking authenticity.
Will come with California title.

BRIEF MODEL HISTORY
The Mercedes-Benz 300TE is part of the W124 generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which was in production from 1984 to 1996. The 1991 Mercedes Benz 300TE is the wagon version of Mercedes W124 series. Offering many innovative features and advanced engineering along with attractive styling and functional design, the series was very successful remaining in production for over 10 years.
The W124 series, including the 300TE, is highly regarded among Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts. It is noted for its build quality, durability, and timeless, functional design. The AMG conversion offers significant performance and handling upgrades and is rarely found on a wagon.
This W124 model was a Japan market car that received a full AMG conversion in Japan.
AMG had been started as an aftermarket concern offering performance upgrades for Mercedes-Benz models. Their conversions being well engineered and favorably received AMG developed a special relationship with the factory and eventually were merged with Mercedes in 1999 becoming the performance brand within Mercedes. BREIF MODEL HISTORY
The original 190 E 2.5-16 of 1988 was Mercedes entry into the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). Its performance potential was limited by the long stroke 4 cylinder engine fitted. In order to be more competitive, for 1989 the race car designers created a new motor with a short stroke design and excellent potential for race tuning. In addition to the new motor various chassis and aero modifications were incorporated. This model was launched to the public as the 190 E 2.5-16 EVOLUTION 1, a street version homologation special of which only 502 examples were built. A distinctive paint finish in blue/black metallic set off the sporty lines. The look, feel and driving character was directly connected to the pure race versions.

An extreme executive limousine offering resplendent luxury and menacing performance
Commissioned and assembled by the company’s Japanese office
Powered by a 6.0-liter, quad-cam “M117” AMG V-8 engine rated at 385 horsepower
Accompanied by Mercedes-Benz Homologation certificate
For a privileged clientele blessed with unbounded checkbooks, AMG would entirely transform any late-model Mercedes-Benz product with greatly improved power, handling, aerodynamics, unlimited interior luxuries, and attention-grabbing cosmetic accoutrements. Each car specified by an AMG customer was bespoke, replete with à la carte options offered from the company’s wide-ranging catalogue.
In mid-1985, AMG began offering a dual-overhead-camshaft cylinder head conversion kit which immediately proved to be a revelation—not only for the performance figures of AMG’s customer cars, but also for the cachet and renown of the company’s novel engineering expertise. At a cost of $43,500, this outstanding performance package consisted of taking a stock 5.5-liter “M117” V-8 engine and boring it out to 6.0 liters, modifying the internals, and equipping it with a pair of proprietary 16-valve, sand-cast aluminum cylinder heads. Additional modifications like uprated brakes, aerodynamics, chassis upgrades, and limitless cosmetic accoutrements could easily knock the final price of a fully kitted AMG S-Class to a figure in excess of $190,000.
Offered today from inarguably the world’s finest collection of highly desirable Youngtimer vehicles, this 1990 560 SEL AMG 6.0 is a Japanese-market car commissioned and assembled by AMG-Japan (Yanase) when new. Currently displaying fewer than 41,000 kilometers (~25,400 miles) at cataloguing time, it is presented in the model’s most evocative color scheme of Blue-Black Metallic over sumptuous Anthracite leather and retains all the most desirable AMG performance upgrades and extravagant luxuries of the period.
Per typical company policies of the period, this car’s AMG engine has been restamped to match the unit listed on its Mercedes-Benz factory data card. However, all the evident accessory components, stampings, and AMG labels confirm its 6.0-liter displacement and proper modified M117 configuration. Close inspection of this SEL’s suspension and underbody assemblies reveal a suitable complement of period-correct Japanese-market AMG modifications, including the Gen II ground effect kit with distinctive chin spoiler. The handsome set of staggered Aero III by OZ wheels with color-matched faces give this impressive pre-merger offering just the right stance and menacing aura.
The well-appointed Anthracite leather interior of this particular pre-merger prize features an extensive AMG burlwood trim kit, rear tray tables, pleated leather door cards, and contrasting, white-faced AMG gauges which are fronted by a four-spoke, leather-wrapped AMG steering wheel.
Pre-merger AMG-modified examples of this vintage (and displacement) are unquestionably some of the most iconic and recognizable German cars of their time, offering unparalleled luxury, performance, and German reliability wrapped in a visually stunning package. Surely among the most luxurious and extravagant super-saloons ever offered by AMG, the sale of this extreme limousine is accompanied by a Mercedes-Benz homologation certificate.
